A Tale Of Two Trailers – Captain America Vs. Spider-Man

So, during this past weekend, Americans gathered around their televisions to celebrate an epic contest between two giants to see which was the champion, and which was the loser. Oh, and there was a football game on, too.

First up, the Sentinel of Liberty- Captain America: The Winter Soldier

We get a great look at the titular antagonist in this, complete with mystery man background. Better still, we get some really fantastic visuals of The Falcon and Black Widow finally uses her bracelet grappling hook! If you weren’t already excited for Cap’s next adventure, you should be now!

Next, in his second big screen outing- The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Okay, so this is an extended look at Sony’s latest spider-flick, with some great exposition about the lead villain Electro- but is it too much? It’s pretty much his entire origin story in less than 3 minutes, and views of what we can probably guess is the climactic final battle. We get a few, tiny glimpses of the Rhino, and some fantastic banter between Peter and his Aunt May here as well- just to let us know there’s more than Jamie Foxx’s electric charm.

So, who’s trailer wins? It’s not really a coin toss here. Captain America crosses the end zone better and does it with more substance over style. While Spider-Man is heavy on exposition, which may leave few surprises in the film- and not really worth an instant replay.

Alright, football metaphors aside, we’re excited for Captain America: The Winter Solder and lukewarm to Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’ll be interesting to see how these two films match up in box office totals later this year.

What do you think?

I’m excited for Captain America and I’m indifferent about Spider-Man. If I see Spider-Man it’s going to be because my friends want to, but I’m not going to make an effort to see it. I am definitely going to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier though, there certainly looks like there is a lot more going on in the movie than the trailer is showing us.

To be honest I pretty much lost all real desire to see the Non-Marvel Studios Marvel movies when Marvel Studios came on the scene to show us how they should be done. They’ve become the only Super-Hero movies I look forward to any more.
